Become a Jeter's Leader
Admission to the Jeter's Leaders program is open to all New York students throughout the five boroughs, and the Western Michigan area. The goal is to recruit 8 - 10 new students (rising freshman) annually. Recruitment will be completed by the Turn 2 Foundation Staff, Director, Program Coordinator, and current Jeter's Leaders. The recruitment process begins in February of the current program year. Students of interest must be completing the eight grade at the point of applying to the program.
Young people entering the Jeter's Leaders program are at a stage in their lives of self-awareness, self-discovery and self-development that will be unparalleled at any other time in their lives. Therefore the ideal young person applying for the program, would either possess or have potential to develop the following qualities:
- Show interest or desire to participate in the program;
- Be committed to carry out the Jeter's Leaders 10 Pillars of Leadership;
- Desire to be a positive role model;
- Exhibit enthusiasm and concern for others;
- Interest in working with youth;
- Ability to function in a group setting and contribute to a team spirit;
- Attend to Jeter's Leaders activities and events locally and nationally;
- Work well with authoritative figures and handle taking direction from others;
- Demonstrate leadership qualities or potential to develop leadership qualities;
- Presents no major disciplinary problems;
- Communicates and works well with others.
Target population:
The program identifies youth who succeed academically and possess leadership characteristics in an effort to ensure that they receive the necessary experiences and training to serve as Ambassadors for Derek Jeter in their communities in addition to ensuring that they successfully finish high school and attend college.
Requirements:
- Be currently in the 8th or 9th grade;
- Live drug and alcohol free;
- Maintain a GPA of 3.0 (B) or better;
- Be involved in a community service or extracurricular activity in your school or neighborhood;
- Be a resident of the New York metropolitan area.
Enrollment:
The Jeter's Leaders program enrollment process includes:
- Completed application form;
- Two (2) letters of recommendation from a teacher, coach, program director, principal, community leader, etc.;
- A copy of the most recent school report card or transcript;
- A 300-word typed essay.

The Jeter’s Leaders is a youth leadership, social change program named by the captain of the New york Yankees, Derek Jeter, and funded by his Turn 2 Foundation. The program is designed to promote healthy lifestyles, academic achievement and social change activism among high school students.
