Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club 2006-2007 Program Summary

(Pictured is the Teen Work Crew for the Teen Center Non-Alcohol Teen Party. Often presented as karaoke nights, such parties demonstrate that alcohol and drug free parties are both cool and fun.)
Since 2002, the Turn 2 Foundation has supported the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club's substance abuse prevention activities. Programs include Staying Smart at "The Bay", and the Winter Instructional Baseball (WIB).
2006-2007 Turn 2 Foundation Staying Smart at "The Bay" Project
- In 2006-2007 we continued our long-time approach of delivering a significant portion of our substance abuse prevention activities in three (3) teen clubs and one pre-teen club. The clubs are called: Beyond the Court, Sister Soldiers, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and United Girls for Life. Beyond the Court included 15 fourteen to sixteen year-old boys, Sister Soldiers enrolls 50 thirteen to seventeen year-old girls in three, 14-week cycles per year, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen enrolls 35 thirteen to eighteen year-old young men per year, and United Girls for Life enrolls 50 ten to twelve year-old girls in four, 12-week cycles per year.
- Substance abuse education is also addressed in the Summer Youth Employment Program, which includes a required 21 hours of educational content. With speakers provided by Urban Health Plan, each SYEP participant received a three-hour session which covered legal, medical, social and employment problems associated with alcohol and drug use. Between 2005 and 2007, the number of SYEP teen receiving alcohol and drug use education increased from 352 to 882, due to the addition of a large number of SYEP lots at our newly acquired direct service site at the Community Center of the Castle Hill Houses project.
- In another effort to reach students, we have created and maintained-throughout Kips Bay's 10 service sites enrolling 13,000 youngsters annually-a positive and vital environment, infused with confidence in the future, where drug an alcohol use is not a desired or acceptable option. This is the objective at Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, every day.
Winter Instructional Baseball (WIB)
- WIB incorporates Smart Moves, the Boys & Girls Club curriculum for substance abuse prevention, and additionally the prevention of premature sexual activity. Since steroid use became a major concern in professional baseball, we include the topic of performance enhancing drugs that may be illegal, medically dangerous, and /or unethical.
- 305 youth participated in this year's WIB program.
- This year's participants learned of Jackie Robinson's contribution to the advancement of freedom in American society. To conclude, each participant wrote a personal response essay.

The Jeter’s Leaders is a youth leadership, social change program named by the captain of the New york Yankees, Derek Jeter, and funded by his Turn 2 Foundation. The program is designed to promote healthy lifestyles, academic achievement and social change activism among high school students.
